On Sunday, April 21, 2013, we drove Washington State Route 225 down along the lower Yakima River.
RCW 47.17.436
State route No. 225:
A state highway to be known as state route number 225 is established as follows:
Beginning at a junction with state route number 224 in Kiona, thence northeasterly by way of Benton City to a junction with state route number 240 near Horn Rapids dam.
In Kiona (Weren't we just here?), within spitting distance of I-82, SR 225 begins at a junction with SR 224. Let's see what's over the bridge.
We cross the Yakima River and slowly zig-zag through Benton City. Small town Sunday. Soon, out into the farmlands. The photo above is a couple miles north of town, approximately halfway between the start and end of the road, as measured in driving time, if not distance.
The farms quickly dwindle to wilderness. We enter a little canyon alongside the Yakima River, flowing wide through the dry landscape. Horn Rapids Park looks like a good spot for wildlife viewing. When the river bends southward, SR 225 doesn't quite make the turn. We run into SR 240 at the edge of the Hanford Reservation and our highway is done.
Farms and desert, river and town. The road has stopped but the water flows down.
